VENA is an established maritime operator active in both Mediterranean and inland waterway transport. Through its fleet of offshore tugs, pusher tugs, and barges operating along the Adriatic–Mantua corridor, the company delivers specialized project cargo services. In a sector widely acknowledged as hard-to-abate, VENA represents a key logistics partner in the development of technologies for low- and zero-emission waterborne transport.

Within the framework of the HMV project, VENA will pursue a decarbonization pathway for its fleet. In collaboration with FPS, it will study the hybridization of the “Tanzania II” pusher tug. The goal of this retrofit is to enable the unit to push a convoy through the Venice-Mantua route (150 km) at zero emissions using hydrogen. The proposed design aims to integrate hydrogen fuel cells with electric motors on the existing shafts, demonstrating the technical feasibility of zero-emission river navigation and assessing its economic viability.
